The building was given by Sultan Moulay Slimane to the United States in 1821 and became the first U.S. public property located abroad. Today, it is the only U.S. National Historic Landmark located outside the United States. Its research library holds more than 10,000 works in English, French, Spanish, Arabic and Portuguese, alongside historical newspapers, maps, photographs, archival documents and other research materials.
